Trezor — Official Setup Guide

Follow these steps to securely set up your Trezor hardware wallet and protect your crypto assets. Applies to Model One and Model T.

Before you begin

Have your Trezor, USB cable, a computer, and a notebook to record your recovery seed. Do not store the seed digitally or share it. Use a quiet space to avoid interruptions.

Step 1 — Visit the official start page

Open your browser and navigate to the official start page. Always confirm the URL is trezor.io/start to avoid phishing sites. The start page provides the installer for Trezor Suite, the recommended companion app for managing your device and assets.

Step 2 — Install Trezor Suite

Download and install Trezor Suite for your operating system. The Suite guides you through firmware verification, device updates, and essential settings. If prompted, install any helper software required for secure communication between your device and the computer.

Step 3 — Connect and initialize your device

Connect the Trezor to your computer using the USB cable. The device will power on and display a welcome message. Trezor Suite will detect the device and walk you through initialization: either creating a new wallet or recovering an existing one from a recovery seed. Follow on-screen prompts carefully and confirm actions on the device screen to verify authenticity.

Step 4 — Write down your recovery seed

Your Trezor will generate a recovery seed phrase. Write these words down exactly and in order on the supplied card or on paper. Store the written copy in a secure, offline location — a safe, lockbox, or other secure storage. Consider a metal backup for durability. Never photograph or type your seed.

Step 5 — Protect your device

Set a PIN code on your device to prevent unauthorized access. Optionally enable a passphrase for an extra layer of protection; note that a passphrase is an advanced feature that effectively creates hidden wallets. Never disclose your PIN or passphrase. Memorize only what is safe and keep all other information offline.

Final checks and best practices

Keep firmware and Suite up to date. Test a small transfer to verify addresses. Never store or enter your seed online. If your device is lost or damaged, you can restore access using your recovery seed on another compatible Trezor device.

Troubleshooting & FAQs

If the device is not detected, try another port or cable and ensure helper software is installed. If firmware update is interrupted, reconnect and follow Suite recovery. Without the recovery seed funds cannot be restored. If you suspect compromise, move funds to a new wallet and generate a new seed.

Advanced tips

Consider creating multiple geographically separated backups of your recovery seed in secure locations. Use a metal backup plate for fire and water resistance. For privacy, use passphrases to create concealed wallets. Use a dedicated, updated computer for high value operations and avoid public networks. Audit connected apps and revoke unknown permissions. Teach trusted family members emergency steps without sharing secrets.
